Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Brandeis in Season Opener

Eric Schreier MEDFORD – Freshman Ethan Schreier (pictured) had a strong collegiate debut with two butterfly wins and a relay victory today as the Tufts men's swimming & diving team won 227-65 over Brandeis University at Hamilton Pool.

Freshman Brian Uribe was also noticeable in his first meet with a pair of wins. Veteran leader Nate Tingen had an individual win and a relay win, while junior Peter LaBarge and sophomore Joshua Huang were both a part of the two Jumbo relay victories.

Schreier swept the butterfly events with a 1:53.84 time in the 200 and a 51.20 mark later in the 100. He was also the third leg of the Jumbo 200 freestyle relay that won with a 1:26.21 finish. Uribe flexed some versatility with victories in the 500 freestyle (4:52.36) and 200 individual medley not long after (1:57.96).

Though Brandeis does not have a diving team and the Tufts divers competed separately, Zach Lawrence posted some excellent scores. The junior totaled 316.05 in one-meter and 280.27 in three-meter.

Freshman Alex Gu, the younger brother of Tufts NCAA champion Roger Gu, opened with a 50 freestyle win of 21.55 seconds. Tufts had other freshmen wins by Eric Lundgren in the 100 back (52.34) and Soeren Euvrard in the 100 free (47.83).

Jumbo sophomores also made their college debuts today after the cancellation of the 2020-21 season last year. Eli Houlton swam 10:17.55 to win the 1,000 freestle event. Huang anchored the 200 free relay win and was the third leg for the lead-off 200 medley relay victory (1:33.96).

LaBarge anchored the 200 medley relay and led off for the 200 free relay. Leading returnees Luke Isayiw (200 MR) and Joshua Balbi (200 FR) both made second-leg relay contributions.

Tingen's 1:54.96 won the 200 backstroke, and he led off the 200 medley relay to begin the Jumbos' season.

Brendan Lu won a pair of races for Brandeis, the 100 breaststroke (59.59) and the 200 breast (2:09.35). The Judges' Sam Dienstag was first in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.24 touch.

The MIT Winter Invitational December 3-5 is next for Tufts.
