MEDFORD - The #15 Tufts University women's squash team continued its strong start to the 2021-22 season with a 7-2 victory against 13th-ranked Williams College on Thursday at Tufts Squash Center.
The Jumbos improved to 5-1 in their final match of the first semester. The Ephs dropped to 0-4. It's the first Tufts win over Williams since 1988.
Tufts won the first three matches, with victories by Sanjana Vissapragada at three, Aleezah Burhan at four and Megan Chen at eight. Chen was down 2-1 before coming back to win 11-9, 8-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7. Burhan won three straight easily after dropping the first game (8-11, 11-4, 11-2, 11-2).
Williams' Yu Kuan put the visitors on the board with a 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 win in the second position. However, victories by Jumbos Diya Sanghi in five games in the sixth position and Ellie Ackerman (pictured) in three games at #7 clinched the win for Tufts. Sanghi went back-and-forth against Eph Nora Brant to win 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-7.
The sixth Jumbo victory was by Nieve Monderer, who gave up just six points in the fifth match. Williams' Theresa Kay won the #1 match over Jumbo Riddhi Joshi 11-3, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9. The Ephs did not have a ninth player and lost that match by default.
Tufts is off until they play at fifth-ranked Virginia on January 10.
