Box Score 2 HARTFORD - Senior Kristina Haghdan pitched a three-hit shutout in game one and Tufts won the second game in extra innings as the Jumbos swept a NESCAC East Division softball double-header at Trinity College on Sunday. The scores were 6-0 and 5-4 (9 inn.).
Haghdan gave up singles in the first, second and seventh innings, and a Trinity runner did not reach second base in the first game. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter while earning the victory.
Tufts scored all the runs they would need in the top of the second. After a single by Josie Steinberg and a walk to Reegan Coleman, Michelle Adelman hit a two-run single for a 2-0 Jumbo advantage. Adelman had made a beautiful diving catch in center field in the first inning.
In the top of the seventh Tufts padded on four more runs. Sophomore Rachel Moore's two-run double was the centerpiece, while Josie Steinberg also singled home a run and scored in the inning.
Steinberg finished 3 for 4 with two runs and the rbi, while Adelman was 2 for 4 with her two rbis. For Trinity, freshman Tara Tweedy gave up five hits and two runs in five innings for the pitching loss.
Game two was scoreless through four innings before late-inning excitement. The Jumbos plated three runs in the fifth as Mia Steinberg hit a two-run double and Casey Maggiore followed with another double to give Tufts a 3-0 margin.
Tufts freshman starter Sophia DiCocco retired the first 12 batters she faced, but the Bantams reached her for a run in the fifth. Gillian Birk led off with a walk and pinch-runner Gianna Tito scored on a double by Kaitlyn DeCapua.
The Jumbos took their 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but Trinity scored twice to tie the game at 3-3. Base hits by Birk, Hannah Zukowski and DeCapula along with a Tufts error led to the runs.
In the bottom of the eighth Trinity's Samantha Witmer hit a one-out double, but DiCocco prevented her from scoring.
Then in the Tufts ninth, Adelman led off with a single and the Jumbos loaded the bases with a Trinity error and a walk. Mia Steinberg's sac fly brought home one run, then her sister Josie Steinberg hit another sac fly and the visitors led 5-3.
Trinity closed to within 5-4 on a triple by Alex Chambers in the bottom of the ninth, but DiCocco finished off her complete game with a strike out and a ground out for the win.
Tufts' 11 hits in game two featured a 2 for 5 game with three rbis and a run by Mia Steinberg. Adelman and Kat Yuzefpolsky also had two hits and scored a run. DiCocco pitched all nine innings giving up eight hits and three earned runs with six K's and a walk.
Chambers finished with three rbis for the Bantams, while DeCapua had two hits. Jordan Stephan also went the distance in the circle and gave up 11 hits and four earned runs for Trinity for the loss.
