Softball To 10-2 With Double-Header Sweep On The Road At Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Tufts senior pitchers Kristina Haghdan and Kristi Van Meter combined to one-hit Wesleyan in the first game, then freshman Sophia DiCocco went the distance allowing just one run in game two as the Jumbo softball team swept a double-header against the Cardinals 2-1 and 4-1 on Saturday.

Michelle Adelman had two hits and scored twice for Tufts today.

Wesleyan's one hit in the first game was by Hannah Docktor in the fourth inning, and she scored after two walks and a wild pitch. The Cardinals had the bases loaded with one out after scoring, but could not add to the lead.

The Jumbos would surge to a 2-1 advantage by scoring twice in the top of the fifth with the help of two Cardinal errors. Rachel Moore reached by error to start the inning and Michelle Adelman followed with a bunt single. Moore scored when Wesleyan threw the ball away on another Tufts bunt, and Adelman came home on a fielder's choice by Mia Steinberg. The Jumbos had two runners on with one out later in the frame, but could not capitalize.

Jumbo senior 2B Emma Della Volpe threw out Wesleyan's potential tying run at the plate in the sixth. She then turned a double play in the Cardinal seventh to help secure the victory.

Haghdan and Van Meter survived a combined eight walks in the game. Haghdan got the win for Tufts, giving up the one hit and one run in four innings. Van Meter pitched three scoreless, no-hit innings to gain a save. Steinberg and Moore had two hits each for Tufts.

Revi Brown pitched well in a complete-game losing effort for Wes, giving up six hits and one earned run.

All of game two's runs were scored in the first. Tufts' top of the first included three Jumbo hits, two wild pitches, two hit-batters, and two walks by Cardinal pitching and a 1-2-3 double play and error by Wesleyan fielders. Adelman singled and scored on a wild pitch. The Cardinal error brought in the second Tufts run, and then a single by Moore and Della Volpe's HBP with the bases loaded made it 4-0. They left the bases loaded.

In the Wesleyan first, Courtney Collins-Pisano led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Sophia Sciarappa.

Brown, who entered in relief for Wesleyan late in the first, shut down the Jumbos from there. She allowed just two hits in her 6.1 innings, and worked around a lead-off double by Tufts' Kat Yuzefpolsky in the fifth.

The Cardinals had some scoring chances against DiCocco. They tried a double-steal in the third, but Della Volpe and Jumbo catcher Emma Jacobson cut down the runner at the plate. They also put runners in scoring position in the fifth and seventh, but DiCocco got the outs she needed.

Improving to 6-1 in her freshman season in the circle, DiCocco struck out seven and walked two in her outing. Yuzefpolsky had three hits for Tufts.

Wesleyan out-hit Tufts in game two 6-5 with Bella Tassone finishing with two. Brooklin Williams absorbed the pitching loss for the hosts.
