WALTHAM - In a good match between national top 20 local rivals, eighth-ranked Brandeis University defeated #18 Tufts University 6-3 in men's tennis on Sunday afternoon.
The Jumbos (3-1) grabbed the lead with an 8-5 third-doubles victory by Niko Hereford and Rishabh Sharda. However, the top Brandeis pair of Adam Tzeng and Jeffrey Chen evened the match with an 8-6 final against the nationally-ranked Jumbo tandem of Boris Sorkin and Josh Belandres. Brandeis (4-1) then moved ahead as Anupreeth Coramutla and Colt Tegtmeier won 8-5 in second doubles giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
In the signature singles match of the day, #2 in the nation Sorkin defeated #25 Coramutla in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). That evened the team score at 2-2. Brandeis got the next two in dramatic fashion though, as both #2 Tzeng and #3 Chen won in three sets after losing the first. Playing indoors on three courts, Brandeis led 4-2 heading into the second set of singles.
Jumbo junior Paris Pentousis got some momentum back for Tufts with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in fourth singles. Brandeis' Dylan Waters in the #5 spot won convincingly as well though to clinch the match for the Judges. The sixth and final contest went to the hosts with Tegtmeier winning a third-set super tie-breaker at #6.
The Jumbos will host Trinity College next Sunday. Brandeis has a home contest against Bridgewater State coming up on Thursday.
