Box Score 2 HARTFORD - Michelle Adelman stayed hot with three rbis in game one, then Nicole Russo had three hits and scored four times in game two as Tufts Softball swept a double-header at Trinity College on Saturday 5-1 and 13-2.
In these non-conference games, Tufts improved to 14-2 overall while extending their winning streak to nine games. The Bantams fell to 3-7. The Jumbos will celebrate Seniors Day tomorrow in a pair of games verus Brandeis starting at noon. The Bantams will conclude their regular season with two games at Bates on Sunday.
Tufts got things started early in game one today, plating its first run in the top of the first. After Josie Steinberg singled and stole both second and third, Russo shot a laser up the middle to bring her in from third and make it 1-0.
The visitors pushed runs across once again in the top of the second. After three singles that snuck out of the infield to load the bases, Adelman drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Casey Maggiore from third. An error in the infield brought in the second Tufts run of the inning for a 3-0 Jumbo lead.
Trinity responded in the bottom of the third with its only run off Jumbo starter Kristina Haghdan (6 IP, 5 H, 1 R). After a double that one-hopped the fence from senior Cassidy Schiff, classmate Samantha Witmer pushed a double down the right field line and it was 3-1.
Adelman picked up two more rbis in the top of the sixth. After singles from Emma Della Volpe and Reegan Coleman, the Tufts center fielder and current NESCAC Co-Player of the Week poked a ball up the middle giving the Jumbos the final 5-1 margin.
Maggiore and Coleman both had two hits in game one for Tufts, while Coleman scored twice. Haghdan moved to 5-1 while Kristi Van Meter pitched the seventh.
Witmer finished with a game-one high three hits out of Trinity's five overall. The Bantams used three pitchers with starter Erin Girard (5.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER) taking the defeat.
In game two, the Jumbos were silenced in the first before scoring in each of the next five innings. In the second, after an error put Russo on first, a base hit moved her to third before Rachel Moore's single brought her home to make it 1-0.
Tufts struck again in the top of the third. Adelman was hit by a pitch and stole second before back-to-back doubles from Russo and Mia Steinberg put the Jumbos up 3-0. They made it 6-0 in the fourth, scoring three unearned after Coleman led off with a single.
Trinity's offense got going in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases on a walk, a base hit and an error, sophomore Michaela Russell skied a deep fly ball to right field scoring junior Dominique Bolduc from third for a 6-1 score.
Three more runs would come across for the Jumbos in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Emma Jacobson to make it 9-1.
Trinity would get one back in the bottom of the fifth, seeing senior Gillian Birk reach third after being hit by a pitch and then scoring on a single from sophomore Scarlett Gilette.
Tufts wrapped up the day with four more in the top of the sixth, eventually winning by the eight-run rule. The frame featured an rbi double by Mia Steinberg, a run-scoring single from Maggiore and an rbi double by Moore.
Sophia DiCocco improved to 8-1 with the pitching victory, giving up five hits and a run. Van Meter handled the last two innings allowing two hits and a run. In addition to Russo's 3 for 4 with four rbis and a run, Mia Steinberg finished 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run and Maggiore was 2 for 3 with two rbis. Coleman (three runs) and Moore (2 for 3, 2 runs, rbi) also joined in on Tufts' 13-hit attack.
Gillette finished with two hits for Trinity. Tiffany Stowers gave up five hits and six runs (two earned) in her three-inning stint to take the loss.
