MEDFORD - Tufts Women's Soccer was back in action Saturday in a home matchup against the New England College Pilgrims. Tufts came out of the gates very strong and continued their outstanding play for the duration of the game tallying an 11-0 win over the Pilgrims.
Liz Reed opened the goal scoring for the Jumbos in the second minute with her second of the season slotting her shot into the bottom corner.
The Pilgrims held strong for the next 13 minutes battling through 10 shots by Tufts without a second goal until New England goalie Emily Sashko's save bounced to the feet of the Jumbos' leading shot taker (six) Melina McDevitt who scored her first of two in the match.
The goal of the game came 23 minutes in as Lily Sykes (pictured) found herself with space to put one on net around 35 yards out and curled it in just below the crossbar to put Tufts up 3-0.
After some valiant efforts from the Pilgrims to progress the ball in the Jumbos' half, Reed found herself back on possession, this time picking out Maddie Pero in the box to put away her second of the season. Moments after the ensuing kickoff, Tufts substitute Talia Greenberg got her opportunity from a well-placed ball by Hannah Isenhart as Greenberg scored putting Tufts ahead 5-0.
The Jumbos closed out the half with one last goal in the 40th minute by defender Jordan Cushner who picked out the top left corner leaving no chance for the Pilgrims goalie to keep it out. Tufts' strong half came to an end up 6-0 with 28 shots, half of which were on goal.
The hosts continued to spread the love into the second half as their seventh goal by a seventh different player came from Kylie Metcalf off a beautiful corner by Margaux Ameer. In the 53rd minute, McDevitt struck again with her third on the season and eighth of the game for the Jumbos. Three minutes later, Lily Keiderling had another long opportunity sail just above the outstretched fingertips of the Pilgrims goalie and into the back of the net.
New England College coach Paul Vazquez continued motivating his side, as the Pilgrims stepped up for their first quality chances of the game coming in the 57th minute as the team put together several quick passes up the field pressuring Tufts defense. This pressure led to a great look for Lauren Hobson in turn requiring a strong save from Jumbo junior goalie Kaelin Logue.
The ninth Jumbo scorer Erin Duncan got her first career goal in the 67th minute helping Tufts ellipse the 10-goal mark. As it had begun, Reed closed out the scoring off an assist from Lily Bienstock with 15 minutes left to play. The remainder of the game held a couple threatening runs by the Pilgrims, but ultimately came to an end with a final score of 11-0.
Pilgrims' Sashko had nine saves on the day while Tufts' Logue had one herself. Both sides made a goalie change part way through the second half as Sashko was replaced by freshman Cassie Fleming. Natalie Rinker took over in net for Logue, as neither substitute goalie tallied a save after entering play.
Coach Martha Whiting's Jumbos play again this Tuesday at home versus the MIT Engineers. The Pilgrims hope to bounce back in Henniker, New Hampshire against Fitchburg State Tuesday.
