Women's Soccer Drops NESCAC Game to Wesleyan 3-1

Box Score

Liz Reed MEDFORD - The Tufts Jumbos fell to the Wesleyan Cardinals 3-1 in women's soccer action at Bello Field on a rainy Tuesday night. Both teams were undefeated in the NESCAC conference heading into the game, with Wesleyan remaining undefeated in the conference at 4-0 and with a 6-0-0 record overall. Tufts drops to 2-1-0 in the conference and 4-2-0 overall.

Tufts came out strong with the first two shots of the game, both which were saved by Wesleyan goalie Sarah Hammond. However, the Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead when Emily Ribatt fed the ball to Audrey Lavey whose shot sailed into the far top right corner of the net 16 minutes into the game.

The Jumbos would respond with a goal of their own by Liz Reed (pictured) who beat two Cardinal defenders on a ball sent towards the Wesleyan goal by Stephanie DiLeo. Reed's left-footed shot beat Hammond into the right side of the net on a break-away at 23 minutes.

Tufts had more shots in the first half 7-3, but Wesleyan was able to take advantage of the opportunities they created. At the 38th minute, Grace Devanny scored the Cardinals' second goal with an assist from Andi Wiley. After taking a sweet feed from Wiley in the middle of the Tufts half, Devanny fended off a defender and buried the ball in the lower right corner of the net.

Tufts had several near-misses including a shot by Margaux Ameer that went just wide of the goal in the 41st minute. Tufts finished the first half with the final two shots, but the score remained 2-1 for the visitors at halftime.

With the rain pouring down, both teams continued to take an aggressive approach in the second half. The Jumbos had two shots blocked, one by Maddie Pero and the second by Melina McDevitt just seconds apart early in the period. Ameer also had a shot at the 50th minute which was saved by Hammond. Less than a minute later Claire Wilkinson had her own shot which went just high.

An outstanding diving save by Bernstein at the 60th minute stopped a shot by Lavey. However, four minutes later in the 64th minute the Cardinals would score their third goal when the ball deflected off Tufts defenders over to Ally Stanton on the right side and she scored into the far side of the goal for a 3-1 Wes advantage.

Reed gave the Jumbos a chance when her shot went just wide of the net at the 67th minute. Wesleyan had an answer when at 71 minutes a shot by Devanny hit the left post.

Hammond made three saves for Wesleyan while Bernstein stopped two shots at the Tufts end. Ameer led the Jumbos with two shots on goal while Lavey led the Cardinals also with two. Tufts led in total shots with 12 compared to Wesleyan's eight. Corners were 5-3 in favor of Wesleyan.

The Jumbos will play again on Saturday when they host Bates College at 12 pm. The Cardinals next game is on October 6 at 6 pm when they travel to Mount Holyoke.
