Box Score MEDFORD – Freshman
Lena Sugrue netted her first two career goals on Saturday to lead the Jumbo women's soccer team past the Colby College Mules 3-1 in NESCAC action.
The Jumbos dominated ball control for the majority of the first half, and received several opportunities to score in the Colby defensive end. They were able to capitalize off of a
Caroline O'Neill corner kick in the 15th minute, as O'Neill sent a beautiful cross that was tapped in by Sugrue on the far side of the net. The goal was the first of the freshman defender's career.
It didn't take long for Sugrue to score her second career goal, as the Jumbos' offense struck again just 14 minutes later. Tufts once again worked a corner kick, and this time it was
Lily Keiderling from the left corner who found Sugrue at the back post for a sensational header goal, putting the Jumbos up 2-0 early on.
The game remained in the Jumbos' favor throughout the first half, as they had 11 shots as opposed to the Mules' two at half.
Tufts carried that momentum over into the start of the second half, as senior midfielder and captain
Maddie Pero snagged a loose ball that got away from Colby goalkeeper Emily McMaster and blasted it through and into the net for her second goal of the season.
Tufts goalkeepers
Kaelin Logue and
Hayley Bernstein were excellent once again, along with the whole defense as well. The only goal of the day for Colby came off of a rebound in which an outstretched Logue stopped a shot, but Mule Sophie Webb cleaned up the loose ball and got the visitors on the board in the 52nd minute.
The Jumbos led the game in shots (15-8), corner kicks (4-2), and shots on goal (8-3). The Mules led in saves (8-2), fouls (15-12), and received the only yellow card of the game.
The Jumbos (6-1-1) look to stay hot when they are back in action tomorrow against Trinity at 12 pm. Colby (3-5) will look to bounce back on Tuesday, when they travel to Maine Maritime Academy.
