MEDFORD, MA (October 2, 2022) -- The Tufts University men's soccer potted five first-half goals on Bello Field against visiting Trinity College (CT), cruising to a 5-1 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win on a cold, windy day Sunday afternoon.
The Jumbos (4-2-4, 2-2-3 NESCAC) controlled the play from the opening whistle, holding possession over the first 10 minutes of the game. Tufts would break through in the 13th minute of the contest, as
Sean Traynor ran onto a long ball down the middle and fired in on Bantam keeper Bernardo Simoes. His first shot was saved, but Traynor stayed with the deflection and tapped in the rebound into an open net for the first goal of the contest.
Less than three minutes later,
Taylor Feinberg scored his second goal of the season as he corralled a loose ball in the box and fired past Simoes to put Tufts up 2-0 at the 15:34 mark of the contest. The goals continued to roll in for the Jumbos in the 22nd minute, as first-year
Henry Perkins scored his first career goal on a beautiful passage of play. On the tally,
Daniel Yanez played a great ball over the top of the Trinity defense to a sprinting
Ethan Feigin, who squared a ball into the path of Perkins right in front of goal for the score.
In the 39th minute the Jumbos upped their lead to four as
Max Cook took a corner kick and his cross was deflected in by a Trinity defender for an own goal. Tufts finished its scoring just before halftime on a great individual effort, as
Woovin Shin controlled a loose ball, got some space and rocketed a left-footed shot along the ground into the right corner for his first goal of the season.
The Bantams (0-5-3, 0-5-1 NESCAC) would get one back in the 67 minute thanks to a header goal from Owen McDermott, but it was not enough as the Jumbos evened their record in NESCAC action.
Tufts held an 18-10 edge in shot attempts, including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal, while each team was awarded four corner kills. Shin led all Jumbo players with three shots, while 13 players fired at least one attempt towards goal.
Erik Lauta played the full 90 minutes in net for the Jumbos, making two stops for the win. Simoes stopped three shots in 78:58 of play for the Bantams, while Matt Birnhak came off the bench to make two saves in the loss.
After a busy few weeks, Tufts will have 10 days off before heading to Worcester, MA for some non-conference action against Clark University at 4 p.m. on October 12.
