EAST LANSING, MI (November 19, 2022) – The Tufts University men's cross country team finished 32nd at the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship Race run on Saturday.
The conditions for the national championship held at the Forest Akers Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University were challenging. The East Lansing area saw snow on Friday, and race organizers did a great job clearing the course as well as possible prior to today's 12:00 noon EST start time. A slick layer of snow remained however, while the temperature was 25 degrees with an 18-mph wind at race time.
The Jumbos were led today by sophomore Ivan Appleton, who had a time of 26:16.7 across the eight-kilometer course. He was 141st out of 292 finishers in the race, up from 170th where he was at the two-mile checkpoint.
The Jumbos were without projected starter Oliver Printy today, but sophomore alternate Martin Horne scored second for the team at a 27:07.3 time. Junior Walter Wagude was third for Tufts (27:49.7), senior Evan Ensslin was fourth for the team (28:14.9) and freshman Luke Brennan was the Jumbos' fifth and final scorer (28:32.2).
Freshmen Amokrane Aouchiche and Calvin Cummings also competed for Tufts posting 28:38.2 and 29:27.4 times, respectively.
The Jumbos were competing in their second straight NCAA Championship Race and 17th overall. However, Appleton, Horne, Ensslin, Brennan, Aouchiche and Cummings were all running at NCAA's for the first time.
MIT won the national team title in convincing fashion with an 82 score. Junior Alex Phillip from John Carroll University took the individual national championship for the second straight year in a time of 24:37.6.
This marks the conclusion of the 2022 cross country season.
