MALDEN, MA (November 22, 2022) – Tufts University sophomore
Tyler Sedlak scored on a penalty shot in the third period to pull the Jumbos within 3-2, but visiting Babson College would hold on for the win in non-conference men's hockey action Tuesday night at Valley Forum.
Babson (6-1-1), ranked seventh in this week's US College Hockey Online Division III poll, had led 3-0 heading into the third. However, Tufts (0-3) tallied two third-period goals to make it interesting. They started with great forechecking by Jumbo freshman
Liam O'Hare, who stole the puck behind the Beaver net and fed it out front. Sophomore
Clark Bolin moved it along to junior defenseman
Sam Miller who scored at 2:50 of the final period making it 3-1.
Then with Babson on a power play, Sedlak stole a pass at the red line and broke away towards the Beaver goal. He was hauled down from behind and awarded a penalty shot, which he scored on at 10:25 to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Babson senior goalie Nolan Hildebrand made a nice save on a shot from high in the slot by Tufts freshman defenseman
Chris Throndson with six minutes left in the third. The Beavers then killed a Jumbo power play and withstood the Jumbos pulling the goalie for the final 50 seconds to finish off the win.
After a scoreless first period when Jumbo junior goalie
Peyton Durand saved 12 Beaver shots, the visitors struck three times in the second. On the first, junior Thomas Kramer dug the puck out of the left boards deep in Tufts' end and sent it to the point for senior James Perullo. He sent it back to Kramer who slipped a pass across to open freshman Ryan Murphy who scored the game's first goal at 2:13 of the middle period.
Both teams killed power plays, then Babson would score twice in 22 seconds to lead 3-0. On a Beaver rush, Kramer's wrist shot from the right face-off circle beat Durand at 11:54. Then freshman Ian Driscoll led senior Andrew Holland into the Tufts zone with a pass, and he fed sophomore Wyatt George who had a step on the Jumbo defense on the right side and he put it home for the 3-0 lead at 12:16.
Shots finished 34-27 for Babson. Hildebrand recorded 26 saves in the Babson goal and Tufts' Durand had 31. Miller blocked three shots for the hosts. The Beavers went 1 for 6 on power plays compared to 0 for 3 for Tufts. Kramer's 13 face-off wins was the most in the game.
