HOOKSETT, NH (November 27, 2022) - Freshman goalie Gus Bylin stopped 32 shots for his first career shutout as the Tufts University men's hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth 3-0 in the consolation game of the Stovepipe Tournament on Sunday.
The win is the first of the season for the Jumbos (1-4), who scored all three of their goals in the second period. The Corsairs, who lost by shutout for the first time since March 2018, dropped to 3-5-2.
Bylin made 10 saves in the first period and then 11 in both the second and third. He helped the Jumbos kill four power plays, making six saves on those extra-man opportunities by UMD. The shutout is Tufts' first since last year's 4-0 win against Middlebury on January 28, 2021.
Daniel Davidson made 15 saves in the Corsair net in the first period as the game was scoreless through 20 minutes. Neither team could capitalize on a pair of power-play chances each in the first.
The Jumbos would get on the scoreboard with the first collegiate goal by freshman defenseman
Chris Throndson. On a power-play, Tufts junior defenseman
Cam Newton made a nice play at the point gloving the puck to keep it from exiting the zone. He then found Throndson, who had moved over to the center of the blue line and scored on a wrist shot at 8:38. The goal was the first power play tally of the season for Tufts.
Three minutes later, another freshman scored his first college goal as
Liam O'Hare made it 2-0. Defenseman
Sam Miller from his own goal line zipped a pass to freshman
Cole Dubicki at the right end of the Jumbo blue line. Charging into the Corsair end, Dubicki moved through a UMD defenseman setting up a 2-on-1. He dished to O'Hare, who was coming down the left side and tapped it in at 11:34.
Newton would get the primary assist again on Tufts' third goal at 17:06 of the second period. His shot from the far side of the right face-off circle was saved by Davidson, but the rebound was free in front of the cage. Junior
Aidan Lovett was on the spot to knock it in for a 3-0 Jumbo advantage.
After a scoreless third period, the Jumbos would finish the game with a 45-32 advantage in shots over the Corsairs. For the two-day tournament, including yesterday's game against host Southern New Hampshire, Tufts out-shot their opponents 110-62 overall.
Senior
Mason Kohn was solid at the face-off dot again today for Tufts going 14-8, while sophomore
Brennan Horn had 12 wins for the Jumbos.
