MIDDLEBURY, VT (November 5, 2022) –
Reegan McCluskey's penalty shot goal was the difference in the game as the Tufts Jumbos Field Hockey team advanced 1-0 over Trinity College in their NESCAC semifinal game today.
The Jumbos were awarded a penalty shot after
Kylie Rosenquest was pushed down as she was getting ready to shoot. This allowed McCluskey to step up and bury the penalty shot with less than a minute left in the first quarter. The goal was McCluskey's 10
th of the season.
In the second quarter, both the Bantams and Jumbos had opportunities. For the Jumbos it was
Rachel Scrivanich, who led Tufts with seven shots in the game, as she got a clean look to score but it was saved by the Trinity goalie. The rebound came to
Meghan MacDonald's stick and a diving save prevented the ball from going into the goal. Then with less than two minutes left before halftime, Trinity's Demarest Janis had a one-on-one opportunity with Jumbo goalie
Sam Gibby and Gibby was up to the task to keep Trinity off the scoreboard. The first half would end with Tufts leading 1-0.
The third quarter saw both teams' goalies keeping the teams in the game. Gibby made two of her eight saves on the day and Olivia McMichael for Trinity made two of her nine saves. For Gibby, one of her saves came when Jackie Frank had the ball come to her stick in the circle and she took a big drive that Gibby fended off with her pad. McMichael kept Trinity in the game off a Tufts corner as she saved two shots in the sequence, the first by
Gabby Sousa and the second on the rebound try by Rosenquest. The third quarter ended with the Jumbos still leading 1-0.
Trinity was awarded seven corners in the fourth quarter with three coming within the last minute of the game. The Jumbo defense led by Gibby along with defenders Sousa and senior
Jackie McCarthy held strong and were able to keep Trinity off the scoreboard. The best look for Trinity off a corner came with 50 seconds left in the game. Izzy Deveney had set herself up for a great scoring look off the corner, but it was blocked by Rosenquest and the Jumbos were able to clear the ball.
Trinity (13-4) was led by Frank, who had four shots in the game with three coming on goal. The Bantams ended the game with a 15-13 advantage in shots along with an 11-2 lead in corners.
The Jumbos will continue New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament play tomorrow in the championship game at 12 P.M. against Middlebury.
