MEDFORD, MA (December 11, 2022) -- Visiting No. 2 New York University outscored the No. 13 Tufts University women's basketball team 18-7 in the third quarter, pulling away for a 74-54 non-conference victory in play from Cousens Gymnasium Sunday.
The Violets (8-0) pounded the ball inside all game long, and got a pair of double-doubles from Jenny Walker and Natalie Bruns as took advantage of Tufts being in foul trouble up front all game. The Jumbos battled well in the first half, especially playing shorthanded for the second straight day this weekend.
Tufts took its first lead of the game at 9-8 midway through the first quarter on a triple from
Annika Decker, but a 9-0 run by NYU put the visitors up 17-11 before taking a 19-13 lead into the second quarter. Tufts trimmed its deficit down to one quickly in the frame on a
Sarah Crossett three-point play, but NYU pushed its edge back up to nine with 3:54 remaining in the first half.
With 40 seconds to go in the half,
Hannah Kelly nailed a jumper to make it a three-point game at 38-35 but Walker made a jumper right before the half to make it 40-35 at the break. The Jumbos started the third quarter strong with five straight points to tie the game at 40 on a Kelly lay-up, but an 18-2 run by the Violets to end the quarter was the difference as NYU stayed undefeated on the season.
The Jumbos got 19 points, five rebounds and three assists from Crossett, as she wsa 7-of-12 from the field while drilling both of her three-point attempts. Kelly posted 13 points for the second straight day, also tallying five rebounds as she shot 6-of-16 for the contest.
Sofia Gonzalez tallied six points, three assists and three boards, while Decker also finished with six points.
Samantha Sousa also finished with five assists, five boards and three points in the loss for Tufts, as the hosts shot it well from behind the arc making 7-of-12 from downtown (58.3 percent).
NYU saw Walker post 23 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting, while Bruns also finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win. NYU led Tufts 18-8 in second chance points, while holding a 36-22 edge in points in the paint. The Violets also posted a 46-34 edge on the glass, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds.
The Jumbos are off until after the Holiday break, heading to Hoboken, NJ December 29-30 for the Stevens Holiday Tournament. Tufts will take on host Stevens Institute of Technology Thursday, December 29 at 3 p.m. before taking on either George Fox University or the University of Scranton Friday, December 30.
