WATERVILLE, Maine - The 800 freestyle relay broke the school record as the Jumbo men's swimming & diving team opened the 2022 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships on Thursday night at Colby College.
Tufts' foursome of Ethan Schreier (pictured), Eric Lundgren, Nate Tingen and Victor Vollbrechthausen combined for a 6:38.76 time. They were 1.43 seconds faster than the previous Jumbo record of 6:40.19 from five years ago in 2017. The Jumbos were second in the race tonight.
In his lead-off leg, Schreier broke his own school record in the 200 freestyle with a 1:39.17 split. He had previously lowered NCAA champion Roger Gu's former 200 free record with a 1:39.55 at MIT earlier this season. Schreier topped that tonight, followed by Lundgren with a 1:40.62 time, Tingen in 1:39.18 and Vollbrechthausen at 1:39.79.
Tufts' second team in the 800 free relay tonight had Soeren Euvrard, Eli Houlton, Charlie Duffy and Tim Chou. They finished 14th with a 6:46.22 mark.
Both of the Jumbos' times tonight were faster than the NCAA B cut of 6:47.12. Tufts is second in team scoring with a 76 score behind Williams College (90). Amherst College and Connecticut College are tied for third at 72.
The first full day of the conference meet tomorrow has preliminaries beginning at 10 am and finals at 6 pm.
