NORTHAMPTON - Junior diver Zach Lawrence of the Tufts University men's swimming & diving team earned fourth place in the one-meter event at the NCAA Northeast-North Diving Regional hosted by Smith College today. His performances today and yesterday in the three-meter event have qualified Lawrence for the 2022 NCAA Championships.
With an 11-dive score of 441.0 today, Lawrence totaled just 2.45 points less than third-place finisher Sam Cahaly from Colby College (443.45). Combined with his fourth-place showing in the three-meter event yesterday (416.10), Lawrence will be one of five divers from the region to earn a berth into the 2022 NCAA Championships coming up March 16-19 in Indianapolis.
Lawrence had his four best dives at the end of the meet today. He was awarded a 47.15 for a Back 1 1/2 Somersault Pike that was his eighth dive. He followed that with a 46.80 score in a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault Pike. He was then at his best in the final two, a Forward 1 1/2 Somersault 2 Twist Free that recorded a 48.10 score, and a Back 1 1/2 Somersault 1 1/2 Twist Free in which he earned his top score on his last dive with a 48.75.
Williams College's Kobe Tray won today's one-meter Regional title with a 470.65 score.
Lawrence joins seven Tufts swimming teammates who also qualified nationally.
