CLERMONT, Fla. - Capping an excellent 2022 opening day for the Jumbos, sophomore pitcher Sky Johnson hurled a one-hit shutout as the Tufts softball team defeated Clarkson University 8-0 in five innings on Saturday.
Paired with a 6-0 win over Hope earlier in the day, Tufts did not allow a run in 12 innings on Saturday as they began their spring break trip in Florida. Johnson was perfect against Clarkson for 4.2 innings until Sam Short singled to right field with two outs in the fifth. Johnson struck out six and walked no one in her five-inning collegiate debut.
Bela Jimenez led Tufts offensively going 2 for 3 with two runs and an rbi. Michelle Adelman finished 1 for 3 with two runs and an rbi and Vanessa Venkataraman was 2 for 3 with an rbi. Kat Yuzefpolsky drove home two runs.
Tufts' three runs in the bottom of the first were more than they would need. Yuzefpolsky singled to center field and Josie Steinberg singled to left. After both advanced on a wild pitch, they both scored on a Clarkson error (one of six by the Golden Knights in the game). Rachel Moore then stole second and Venkataraman singled her home.
Jimenez's single to left field started a two-run second inning that pushed Tufts' advantage to 5-0. She went to second on an error while Adelman was hitting, then both advanced on a passed ball. Jimenez scored on a ground out by Yuzefpolsky and Adelman came home on a single to left by Meggie Murphy.
The Jumbos ended the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Keila McCabe pinch hit and reached by error. Jimenez doubled to right-center scoring McCable. Adelman followed with a single up the middle scoring Jimenez. Adelman went to third on an error in the outfield during her hit and then scored on Yuzefpolsky's fielder's choice.
Tufts plays twice again tomorrow, against Luther at 11:30 am and versus Grinnell at 4:00 pm.
