CLERMONT, Fla. - Tufts scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and go on to a 4-1 victory against Luther College at The 2022 Spring Games in Florida on Sunday.
The Jumbos, now 3-0, got six innings from starter Sky Johnson (7H, 1R) and a save by classmate Sophia DiCocco with a 1-2-3 seventh.
In the fifth, four straight Tufts singles brought in the three runs. Michelle Adelman started Tufts' rally with a one-out single, followed by a Kat Yuzefpolsky base hit sending Adelman to third. Josie Steinberg's rbi single scored Adelman and sent Yuzefpolsky to third. After Steinberg stole second, Nicole Russo's (pictured) single brought home two runs and the Jumbos led 4-1.
After consecutive singles by Luther to lead off the sixth, Johnson worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts surrounding a ground ball back at her.
Both teams had scored a single run in the fourth. For Luther, Kyal Heydt singled and was pinch-ran for by Alyssa Blankenship. Kenna Vavrichek singled her home with two outs and the Norse led 1-0. For Tufts, Rachel Moore reached by error with one out and eventually scored on an error by the Luther catcher following a dropped third strike.
The Norse (5-4) out-hit Tufts 7-5 with Sydney Schultz going 2 for 3. Kendra Cooper took the pitching loss for Luther with a complete game allowing three earned runs and striking out nine.
Adelman went 2 for 4 for Tufts.
Tufts continues Sunday with a game versus Grinnell College at 4 pm.
