CLERMONT, Fla. - Sophia DiCocco and Lacy Chilek combined on a three-hit shutout, while Michelle Adelman and Josie Steinberg (pictured) both drove home two runs in Tufts Softball's 7-0 victory against Grinnell College on Sunday.
The Jumbos scored two runs right away in the top of the first. With one out, Bela Jimenez singled and scored when Steinberg doubled. With two down, Steinberg advanced to third on an error by the Grinnell catcher and then scored on a wild pitch.
Emma Jacobson got on by fielder's choice and Lindsay Neumann drew a walk to start Tufts' three-run fifth. Both advanced a base on a wild pitch and then Adelman singled them both home to put Tufts up 4-0. With two outs in the inning, Steinberg singled home Adelman and the Jumbos led 5-0.
DiCocco would go five innings allowing three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. She has two wins and a save in the Jumbos' first four games after leading NESCAC with 11 victories in a shortened season last year.
Adelman scored from third after Jimenez stole second to make it 6-0 Tufts in the fourth. Meggie Murphy singled and scored on a double play in the fifth for a Jumbo 7-0 margin.
Chilek made her collegiate debut and struck out four with two walks while allowing no hits in her two innings.
Steinberg finished with three hits, Keila McCabe had two and Adelman scored twice for the Jumbos (4-0).
Jasmine Oda had a hit and a walk for Grinnell. Lane Kohler (4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER) took the loss for the Pioneers. Maddy O'Bryan pitched the final three innings allowing four hits and a run.
The Jumbos have morning games tomorrow with a 9 am start versus Hamilton College and an 11:15 am game versus Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
