Softball Falls 4-2 Against Wisconsin-Stevens Point

Box Score

CLERMONT - The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point earned a 4-2 victory over the Tufts softball team at The 2022 Spring Games in Florida on Monday.

After a scoreless first inning, UW-Stevens Point started the scoring in the top of the second. Meg Lawrence tripled to left field leading off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Van Beek. The Pointers added two more runs in the second when they loaded the bases with no outs. Both Sara Traxel and Becca Geiyer hit sacrifice flies and Steven Point led 3-0.

Van Beek started in the circle for UW-Stevens Point and retired the first six Tufts hitters, and through five allowed four hits and no runs. Meanwhile, the Pointers added another run in the fourth. Rachel Baker walked and then stole second with two outs. She scored after a single by Jenna Eilers to shortstop and an error on the play for a 4-0 lead.

Tufts got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Josie Steinberg had a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Sophia DiCocco (pictured), who had entered to pitch in the fifth. She would hold Stevens Point scoreless in her three innings giving up just two hits.

The Jumbos would bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Vanessa Venkataraman had a pinch-hit single with one out. After a second out was made, Michelle Adelman doubled to left field scoring Venkataraman. Kat Yuzefpolsky walked and Steinberg singled up the middle loading the bases. Van Beek, who had re-entered the game to pitch, got the last out on a strike out to end the threat though.

Eilers went 2 for 2 with a run for UW-Stevens Points while Van Beek earned her fifth pitching win (5.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R).

Steinberg and Neumann had two hits apiece for Tufts (4-2). Chilek (4 IP, 3 HR, 3 ER) had the pitching loss.

Tuft continues their busy week tomorrow with games against Wisconin-Eau Claire (9:15 am) and Elmhurst (1:45 pm).
