Box Score
CLERMONT, Fla. - Jumbos Lindsay Neumann, Josie Steinberg (pictured) and Meggie Murphy combined for seven hits and seven runs batted in while sophomore Sky Johnson threw a complete-game two-hitter as the Tufts softball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 8-1 in Florida on Friday. It was a meeting of NFCA top 20 teams with Tufts at #10 in this week's national poll and Wisconsin-Oshkosh #18.
The win by the Jumbos (7-3) ended a six-game winning streak by the Titans (10-4), and was small measure of revenge for Tufts who had their season ended at the College World Series by UW-Oshkosh last spring.
Neumann went 2 for 4 with two runs and two rbis, Steinberg was 2 for 4 with two rbis and Murphy finished 3 for 4 with three rbis and a run. Kat Yuzefpolsky scored twice and Keila McCabe had two hits for Tufts. Johnson won her fourth game of the week giving up just one run with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Sophie Wery and Morgan Rau had the Titan hits while Maddie Fink was the losing pitcher (4 IP, 11 H, 4 ER). The Titans made three errors in the game.
Tufts got right to it with two runs in the first. Yuzefpolsky was hit by a pitch to start the game and took second on a passed ball. After Neumann singled her to third, a Steinberg single to left brought Yuzefpolsky home for the game's first run. Murphy followed with a single up the middle to bring Neumann home getting Tufts off to a 2-0 start.
Two more in the second gave Tufts a 4-0 lead. Bela Jimenez singled to right field to lead it off, then Rachel Moore singled through the left side. With one out, Neumann doubled to left-center scoring Jimenez and Moore.
The Jumbos would expand the margin to 7-0 in the fourth. Yuzefpolsky walked and Neumann reached by erorr to start it. After a ground out advanced the runners, Steinberg's ground out to short scored Yuzefpolsky. Consecutive singles by Murphy (rbi), McCabe and Keriann Slayton (rbi) then scored two more for Tufts.
Johnson wouldn't allow a hit until the fifth, and the Titans turned it into their only run. Wery singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strike out, Morgan Rau singled to left field brining home the run. In the Jumbo sixth Murphy's third rbi of the game on a single down the right field line scored Michelle Adelman, who had reached on a fielder's choice, with the final run of the game.
Tufts will play a triple-header with games against Augustana, Old Westbury and Elmhurst on Saturday.
