CLERMONT, Fla. - Jumbos Lacy Chilek (pictured) and Keila McCabe combined on a four-hit shutout and the Tufts offense benefitted from six SUNY Old Westbury errors in a 7-0 victory over the Vikings in Florida on Saturday.
Chilek started and gave up two hits and no runs in four innings to get the victory for Tufts (9-3). McCabe, in the first outing of her collegiate career, picked up a save by going three innings and allowing two hits and no runs. McCabe was also 2 for 4 with a run and an rbi at the plate.
The Jumbos led 3-0 before the Panthers even came to bat. Kat Yuzefpolsky singled to left field to lead off the game. Then a combination of two Old Westbury errors and rbi singles from McCabe and Lexi Grein (2 for 4 with a run and an rbi) put Tufts on top early.
Vikings starter Christina Hassett would keep it a 3-0 game until the sixth. Tufts added one to their lead then as Sophia Crowley reached by error, Meggie Murphy walked and Vanessa Venkataraman singled to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Lindsay Neumann then walked to score Crowley.
The Jumbos brought their lead to 7-0 in the seventh. Chilek walked, Grein singled and Crowley got on by error to load the bases again. A walk to Yuzefpolsky and an error while Neumann was hitting scored the runs.
Old Westbury had two hits in the fourth inning against Johnson, but couldn't score. Gianna Ventiere singled through the left side and Alaina Reilly singled through the right side, but Venkataraman in right field threw Ventiere out trying to advance to third.
Ventiere had two of the Vikings' four hits. Hassett finished with the loss, though none of the seven runs she allowed were earned. She allowed nine hits and four walks.
Yuzefpolsky scored twice for the Jumbos and Murphy also had two hits.
