Box Score
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Tufts University softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth innning, and then held off Elmhurst Univerity in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 win and sweep their Saturday triple-header. The Jumbos had wins over Augustana (Ill.) 2-1 and SUNY Old Westbury 7-0 earlier in the day.
In a 0-0 game heading into the bottom of the sixth, Josie Steinberg and Meggie Murphy both singled to start Tufts' rally. After Keila McCabe sacrificed both over a base, Keriann Slayton singled to right field scoring Murphy and then Bela Jimenez - who had reached on a fielder's choice - followed during an error on the play. The Jumbos led 2-0.
In the top of the seventh, Elmhurst's Hannah Dunk reached first on an error and took second on a ground-out to the right side. She then scored on a Jena Hicks single to center field. With pinch-runner Madison Spencer on first as the potential tying run and one out, Jumbo starter Sophia DiCocco got the last two outs with a fly ball and a ground ball to win the game.
DiCocco (pictured) went all seven frames giving up five hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Lindsay Neumann and Steinberg were both 2 for 3 for Tufts.
Elmhurst switched pitchers Chiara O'Leary and Brianna Pisauro twice, with Pisaura (2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) taking the loss. Jackie Orel was 2 for 3 for the Bluejays.
Both teams had left two runners on base in the first inning. The Jumbos had six LOBs before scoring in the sixth.
Tufts finishes its week in Florida with games against St. Olaf and Westminter (Mo.) tomorrow.
