NORTHAMPTON – Tufts junior
Walter Wagude won the race and the Jumbos placed six runners in the top 10 while earning first place at the season-opening Smith College Co-Ed Invitational men's race Saturday.
Wagude won on opening day for the second straight year, including his first-place at Trinity College's Bantam Invitational a year ago. Today he ran 15:47.6 across the five-kilometer course. He was three seconds and change ahead of Trinity's Tobias L'Esperance-Kerekoff (15:51).
Tufts' team score of 30 to win the competition was 19 better than second-place Trinity (49). American International College was third with a 55 score.
Junior
Ryan Proulx had a good season debut, finishing second for Tufts and fifth overall in a 16:20.1 time. Senior
Oliver Printy was seventh overall in 16:22.8, followed by sophomore
Martin Horne in eighth (16:24.8). Senior co-captain
Evan Ensslin was the final scoring Jumbo in ninth with a 16:26.4 time.
Freshman
Luke Brennan ran 10th out of 64 competitors in his collegiate debut at 16:27. Other Jumbos in the top 15 were freshman
Amokrane Aouchiche 12th (16:34.5) and Colby College transfer
Keegan Gleason 15th (16:45.9).
Tufts takes its annual trip to the Pineland Shootout hosted by Bates next Saturday.
