WILLIAMSTOWN -
Kylie Rosenquest scored off a penalty corner to give Tufts Field Hockey a 3-2 overtime win over Williams College on the road on Sunday afternoon.
In overtime, Tufts controlled much of the play and after two previous good shots, Tufts was awarded a corner.
Jackie McCarthy took the corner and passed it to
Lainie Pearson at the top of the circle. Pearson was open and took a shot that bounced over Ephs goalie Carson Stephenson. The ball landed at the stick of Rosenquest who was able to score it 6:18 into the extra period.
The first half was dominated by Williams as they controlled much of the play and had the better chances. In the first quarter Williams scored both of their goals. Pilar Torres scored less than two minutes into the game for the Ephs after her corner went to the top of the circle and the ball got knocked around before she got it back and her shot trickled past Jumbo goalie
Sam Gibby.
A little more than six minutes after that, Kiki Higgins puts Williams up 2-0 after Kelly McCarthy was open in the middle of the circle and received a pass from the wing. She shot, but Gibby came out and made the save. The ball went to Higgins, and she put it into the open cage. The rest of the first half was move even, as both teams had their chances, but the half ended 2-0 Ephs.
To start the second half, Tufts made it a new ballgame just a minute into the half as
Mia D'Angelo scored her third goal of the season. D'Angelo found herself open in the middle where she took a pass from Rosenquest who had made a run down the right side of the field and beat her defender with a nice move to have her hands free to pass it to D'Angelo for the goal. The Jumbos continued their good play over the rest of the quarter, and D'Angelo had another good shot that was saved by the Ephs' second-half goalie Gates Tenerowicz. The ball was free, but no Jumbo could get to it before a Williams defender cleared it.
In the fourth quarter, Tufts controlled the play as they out-shot Williams 5-1 and much of the play was on the Williams end of the field. It resulted in Tufts tying the game with 8:07 left.
Andrea DelGiudice was able to shoot the ball after a Tufts corner was deflected and came to her. Her shot barely crossed the line, but it tied the game at two apiece.
In the last two minutes of regulation, both teams had good chance. First for Williams, Kelly McCarthy had an opportunity, but her shot was wide. Then for the Jumbos,
Kayleigh McDonald got a shot off from a corner, but it was saved by Tenerowicz, which sent the game to overtime tied at 2-2.
The two teams combined for 27 shots todayt, with the Jumbos having the slight edge in that category at 14-13. Tufts also held a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal with nine of them coming in the second half and overtime. Williams' Tenerowicz and Carson Stephenson combined for nine saves (five by Stephenson), while Gibby made four saves on the afternoon.
Tufts is now 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The Jumbos will continue their road stretch as they will square off with Wesleyan on Wednesday night at 6:00. The loss drops Williams to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. They will travel next Saturday the to play Colby College at noon.
