MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Tufts University men's tennis team was dominant at the Middlebury Invitational this weekend, winning all six titles (four singles, two doubles).
In their season-opening weekend, Tufts had senior
Rishabh Sharda win A singles, freshman
Alex Ganchev took B singles, junior
Corey Marley was the C singles winner and sophomore
Lachie Macintosh captured the D singles title.
Tufts had both finalists In the A and B doubles brackets. In A's, the sophomore tandem of
Vuk Vuksanovic and
Derin Acaroglu defeated teammates Sharda and Ganchev 8-4 to win the title. For B's, MacIntosh and Marley won the title over teammates
Mauricio Gutierrez and
Sacha Maes 8-6.
Seeded second in A singles, Sharda's run to the top singles title included wins over RPI's Andy Zhu in the semifinals 6-4, 6-1, and then a 6-2, 6-2 victory over four-seed Brendan Jimenez of Skidmore in the final. Sharda now has three titles at Middlebury in his career. He was part of a B doubles win in 2021 and was the B singles winner in 2019.
The unseeded Ganchev won B's in his first weekend of collegiate action at Middlebury. On Sunday he defeated 2-seed Julian Wu of the host Panthers 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 to reach the final where he won against Simon Kauppila (Brandeis) 6-4, 6-0.
Marley's C singles crown included a win over Aaron Bayse of Brandeis in the semis (6-0, 6-4), then a title victory against Matthew Danielson from Bates (6-3, 6-1).
The D singles champion Macintosh topped Bates' Paul Zhou 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals, and then defeated Josh Fleishman of Colby College 6-2, 6-3 for the title on Sunday.
Tufts returns to action next weekend at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Bowdoin College.
