Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Babson Hands Field Hockey First Loss 2-1

MEDFORD - Senior Brianne McGrath scored early in the third quarter to break a 1-1 tie and give visiting Babson College an eventual 2-1 victory at previously unbeaten Tufts in non-league field hockey action Tuesday night at Ounjian Field.

During a corner, McGrath helped send the ball around the right edge of the circle before moving inside. She took a pass from senior Kelsey Low and scored her seventh goal of the year with 12:41 on the clock in the third.

The  Beavers then had to defend three Jumbo corners late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. A Tufts shot by junior Andrea DelGiudice was saved by Babson keeper Bayla Furmanek, and then a shot by Jumbo senior Reegan McCluskey was blocked by Beavers senior Claire Nichols.

With the win 10th-ranked Babson improved to 5-3 overall. The Jumbos' seven-game winning streak to start 2022 ended as they fell to 7-1.

In a largely uneventful first period, Babson scored with 3:08 remaining for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Andrea Marguerite inserted to senior Meara Hanyon, who sent a back-handed pass to sophomore Berit Sharrow. She sent the ball towards the front of the net where it deflected off a Tufts defender's stick to sophomore Jessica Evans' stick and she knocked it in.

Tufts nearly tied it on a corner halfway into the second quarter, but a blast by McCluskey was saved by Furmanek. However, the Jumbos would not be denied on their next corner as sophomore Mia D'Angelo sent it right to McCluskey and she drilled it into the left side of the cage for her third of the year with 6:39 left until halftime.

The game would feature five cards overall, including four against Tufts. However, no goals were scored while teams were down a player.

Shots finished 8-6 in favor of Tufts overall, but the Beavers had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Corners were even 6-6. Gibby made three saves for Tufts and Furmanek finished with two for Babson.
