Erin Duncan celebrates Jumbos goal

Wilkinson’s electric performance propels #6 Jumbos to win at #17 MIT

Box Score CAMBRIDGE - Claire Wilkinson's assist to Erin Duncan in the 57th minute and first goal of the season in the 75th minute carried #6-ranked Tufts to victory over #17 MIT 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

The game had been a 0-0 defensive battle through the first 56 minutes of the game. Eventually in the 57th minute, Wilkinson was able to break free down the right side of the field to send a beautiful cross into the middle of the box for Duncan, who one-timed it into the back of the net for the Jumbos. The goal was already the fifth of the season for Duncan, who leads Tufts in scoring.

A little while later, in the 75th minute, it was Wilkinson once again who started the Tufts scoring chance, finding open space in the middle of the field. She got to about the 10-yard line on the right side of the field before launching a left-footed missile that landed in the upper 90 on the far side of the goal to put the Jumbos up 2-0 late in the second half.

The goal scoring wasn't the only excitement from the Jumbos in this one, however. The goalie tandem of Kaelin Logue and Hayley Bernstein as well as the brick-wall defense once again stood tall against another tough opponent. This is already the fourth shutout of the year for the Jumbos in just seven games played. Perhaps the most exciting stop came in the 34th minute of the first half, when Logue wrapped up a shot from MIT's Ashley English at the lower right side of the net to thwart the Engineers' scoring opportunity.

The Jumbos led the game in shots (11-8), corner kicks (3-2) and fouls (14-8), and also received the only yellow card of the game. The Engineers led the game in saves, as Ava Gillikan and Lauren Castle combined for four as opposed to Bernstein and Logue's combined three.

The Jumbos (5-1-1) are back in action at home on Saturday against Colby at 12:30 pm. The #17 Engineers (7-2-1) look to bounce back against Wheaton at 1 pm on Saturday.
