MALDEN, MA (January 13, 2023) – Visiting Amherst College scored two power-play goals in a 36-second span early in the third period to earn a 3-2 NESCAC men's hockey win at Tufts University on Friday evening.
The league-leading Mammoths had led 1-0 early in the second period before Tufts scored twice to take the lead heading into the third. Zach Murray and Ryan Corcoran then scored the third-period power-play goals to lift Amherst.
Corcoran scored a pair of goals for the Mammoths, who improved to 8-3-2 overall and 7-1 in the league.
Sam Miller and
Mason Kohn scored for the Jumbos, who fell to 5-7-1 and 2-4-1 NESCAC.
Following a scoreless first period, Amherst struck barely one minute into the second. Bobby Luca broke up a Tufts clearing attempt and Corcoran kept it in the Jumbo zone at the line. He sent the puck to Joshua Burke in front of the goal, whose shot was wide. Luca retrieved it behind the net and fed Corcoran who jammed it home.
Tufts would score twice in the final six minutes of the middle stanza to take a lead. On the first goal,
Harrison Bazianos chased down the puck on the right side of the Amherst end. He sent it out to Miller moving in from the left point and he put a dart into the right side of the net for a 1-1 score.
Then on a power-play,
Cole Dubicki controlled the puck for Tufts out of a scrum behind the Amherst goal. He sent it out to Miller, who moved it across to
Tyler Sedlak at the right point. Sedlak zipped it back to Dubicki low in the left circle, then he found Kohn in front who directed the pass in for a 2-1 Jumbo lead with 3:32 to go in the second.
Amherst tied the game 2-2 on a power-play when Tyler Bourque kept the puck in at the left point and sent it across the blue line to Andrew Carmody. His shot on net was saved by Tufts' Gus Bylin, but Murray was able to poke in the rebound at 6:20 of the third.
Tufts was penalized again 20 seconds later and the Mammoths capitalized. Moving the puck well on the power-play, Joey Verkerke at the left point slid a pass over to Connor McGinnis. He then shoved it in to Corcoran at the right face-off dot and his shot beat Bylin at 6:56 for the eventual game-winner.
The Mammoths had to kill a power-play and withstand Tufts pulling Bylin for an extra skater before securing the win.
Wisco finished with 32 saves for Amherst, including 14 in the first period, as Tufts out-shot the Mammoths 34-28 in the game. Bylin made 25 stops for the Jumbos.
