MEDFORD, MA (January 15, 2023) – First-year
Daniella Davia won eight of her nine bouts as the Jumbo women's fencing team hosted the Tufts Invitational at the Gantcher Center on Sunday.
In three contests, Tufts defeated Wellesley College 15-2 and lost to both LIU-Brooklyn (14-13) and Northwestern University (19-8).
Davia won all three of her foil matches against Wellesley and LIU and took two out of three from Northwestern. Her overall season record now stands at 24-5.
In the win over Wellesley, Tufts won sabre 6-3 with two victories apiece by first-year
Alexia Newell and senior
Emily Valadez. The Jumbos also won six foil matches against Wellesley with sophomore
Shannon Chen's two wins adding to Davia's sweep. Freshman
Karen Bei posted two epee victories against Wellesley.
The LIU match went down to a final bout in epee, which the Sharks won. Tufts took seven of the nine foil matches behind Davia and two wins each by Chen and junior
Lea Levi. Bei had two victories for the Jumbos in epee and would finish the day with a 5-4 mark (23-10 for the year). Newell added two sabre wins versus LIU.
Against Northwestern, Levi joined Davia with two victories in foil. Levi also finished the Invitational with five wins in nine matches. She has a 21-9 season record.
Tufts, now 6-8, competes at a Northeast Fencing Conference event hosted by Boston College next Sunday.
