MALDEN, MA (January 20, 2023) – Gerard Marretta scored a hat trick and Devon Bobak made 21 saves for a shutout as the visiting Trinity College men's hockey team won 6-0 at Tufts University in Friday night NESCAC action at Valley Forum.
The Bantams won their sixth straight game, improving to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the NESCAC. The Jumbos fell to 5-9-1 (2-6-1 NESCAC) with their third consecutive loss.
Trinity's first goal 15 minutes into the game came when Jax Murray took a loose puck from out of scrum along the right boards in Tufts' end and turned around for a quick pass to Rick Boysen. Guarded closely by a defender, Boysen's shot from the right side of the slot went inside the left post for a 1-0 Bantam lead.
Less than three minutes later, the visitors went up 2-0 when a shot by Eamon Doheny from the left point went through traffic and found the net.
A long pass by John Campomenosi from behind his own goal line set up the Bantam third goal at 9:18 of the second period. Kyle Tomaso collected the puck at the red line and as he moved into the Jumbo zone sent a pass cross-ice to Marretta. His first shot was saved, but he scored on the rebound for a 3-0 Trinity lead.
The Bantams would get their next two goals on power plays. Tomaso was on the spot at the left side of the goal to score into a mostly open net on a rebound at 14:30 of the second. Then a straight-away shot from the blue line by Ned Blanchard was tipped home in front of the net by Marretta making if 5-0 one minute into the third.
Marretta earned his hat trick taking a pass from Tomosa in the Tufts end and making a nice move to his forehand to score with five minutes left in the third.
Bobak had to be sharp in the third to earn his shutout, stopping all 10 shots Tufts put on goal. He also got some help as a shot by Jumbo
Harrison Bazianos hit the post.
Gus Bylin started in goal for the Jumbos and made 13 saves. He was replaced after Trinity's fourth goal, with
