MIDDLEBURY, VT (January 28, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's basketball team falls on the road Saturday afternoon to the No. 5 Middlebury College Panthers 72-56 at Pepin Gymnasium in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.
The Jumbos (14-5, 3-3 NESCAC) started the game off on fire as they led 17-4 after a
Tyler Aronson made three pointer and it was his fifth point of the game. Both Aronson and
Dylan Thoerner shad five points before a Middlebury timeout. The Panthers would respond with a 19-6 run to tie the game up when Alex Sobel would make a layup. The teams would trade baskets the rest of the half before the Panthers were able to open up a five-point lead going into the break.
Middlebury was able to take control of the game in the second half as they were able to get to the basket and draw fouls on the Jumbos. The Panthers went 16-19 from the free throw line in the second half and leading scorer Sobel added seven points of his 19 points. After a
Carson Cohen three pointer would cut the Middlebury lead to four, the Panthers would go on an 11-0 run that saw the Jumbos be scoreless for over seven minutes.
Trumann Gettings and
Khai Champion led the Jumbos with 10 points. Gettings and
Scott Gyimesi both had six rebounds. Tufts shot 40 percent from the field on the day (25-63). Tufts had a 14-9 advantage for assists, but poor shooting from behind the 3-point line (6-22) doomed the Jumbos.
Sobel tallied a game-high 18 points for Middlebury (17-2, 6-1 NESCAC), going 7-13 from the field while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Noah Osher came off the bench to give the Panthers 16 points including 4-8 from the 3-point line.
