MEDFORD. MA (October 10, 2023) – A handful of Jumbos added their names to the score sheet tonight as
Thalia Greenberg,
Waverly Sumner,
Caroline Kelly, and
Elsi Aires each provided goals to overcome the Bridgewater State University Bears in dominant fashion under the Tuesday evening lights from Swenson Pitch in Bridgewater, MA.
Jumbos completely dominated the Bears for 90 minutes, as the Jumbos' defense only allowed two shots toward goal on the evening, only one of which was on target. Meanwhile, Tufts' offensive onslaught came as the byproduct of 32 shots on net, 20 on target toward goal. Jumbos tallied five corner-kick opportunities, but their bread and butter came from the pure talent and collectivity of the athletes this evening. Greenberg led the way offensively for the Jumbos, recording a team-high four shots on target for the Jumbos, followed by Aires, and
Casey Lam who each contributed three shots on target. Aires served as the primary playmaker, setting up Greenberg and Kelly on the evening, with a team-high two assists.
Jumbos initiated play with possession to kick off the matchup. The Bears couldn't blink before the Jumbos could capitalize on their first opportunity, as Esli Aires provided a crisp service pass from the right wing to find the cutting Greenberg who took one touch to slot it home, opening scoring for the Jumbos.
Jumbos capitalized once again with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Anna Griffin received possession in the Jumbos' defensive midfield and sent a long through pass behind the Bears' defensive line to find Sumner on her run toward goal. Sumner dribbled with craftsmanship all the way into the Bears' penalty box before cutting between two retreating Bridgewater defenders and slotting home the breakaway past Bridgewater's sophomore goalkeeper Logan Levesque.
Following the first 45 minutes of offensive prowess from the Jumbos they were just beginning to warm up. Five minutes into the second half, Kelly decided she wanted a piece of the pie, using dribble moves to split the Bears through two defenders with a nutmeg, and had herself a strike from the left wing. Her finesse gave the strike just enough to connect with the inside of the far post and recoiled into the net for the Jumbos' third goal of the night.
Aires - in an appropriate fashion - joined in on the action shortly after Kelly's strike. The Jumbos' leading goal scorer found the back of the net off a
Nicola Sommers cross from the right wing after a battle for possession deep in the Bears defensive third. Sommer's cross was placed perfectly, just outside the reach of the leaping Bridgewater defender, to find the cutting Aires to connect with the service. Aires' header was rifled passed Levesque to run the tally up to 4-0 on the night.
With the win tonight, Tufts University women's soccer advances to 6-2-3 on their season, while remaining 2-2-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, as Bridgewater State University falls to 6-5 on their season.
Jumbos are back in NESCAC action on Saturday, as they battle Bates College in a highly anticipated conference matchup from Bello Field in Medford, MA on Saturday, October 14
