MEDFORD, MA (October 7, 2023) – Stop-and-go wind and rain could not stop sophomore midfielder
Daniel Yanez as he struck gold to send in the game-winner late in the second half following a Jumbos penalty with two minutes remaining to secure victory for the Jumbos on their senior day from Bello Field in Medford, MA.
The Tufts University men's soccer program kicked off their matchday today celebrating their seven seniors for the hard work and dedication they have sacrificed for the program. Seniors
Mark Huynh, Gibson Cambell,
Max Clivio,
Woovin Shin,
Sean Traynor,
Mikey Brady, and Liam Gerkin were each recognized for their commitment and celebrated amongst teammates, coaches, and accompanied family.
Jumbos kicked off the first half with their signature offensive tenacity but were matched by the organization of the Emerson defense. The Jumbos outshot the Lions seven to four in the first half, as the Jumbos defense went the entire first half without conceding a corner-kick opportunity. The Jumbos earned three in the first half despite being unable to produce any scoring chances in the first half.
Following halftime adjustments from head coach
Kyle Dezotell, The Jumbos started to break down the Lions' defense one pass at a time for much of the second half.
Many of the Jumbos' chances were faltered by a bad bounce, or a slick surface, as the wind and rain played a significant role in disorganizing chances for both teams. Teams started to get physical and chippy as time winded down and desperation seemed to set in for the Lions. Following a good entry pass from
Ethan Jett to
Ethan Feigin into the Lions' penalty area, Feigin took one dribble into the box before being tripped up, and was sent diving into the box as the referee came over, whistleblowing and pointing to the penalty spot.
It would be Yanez who stepped up to the spot with the weight of the game and his teammates on his shoulders. Yanez stepped up and delivered the win as his kick sailed past the Emerson keeper into the bottom left to give the men the late lead with two minutes left.
Jumbos stifled any last chances made by the Lions with what little time was left remaining in the game. With 20 seconds remaining,
Mikey Brady received possession and dribbled into the Lions defensive third as he shielded the ball as the clock struck zero.
The Jumbos finished the game outshooting the Lions 23 to nine (seven to two respectively), while producing 10 corner kicks to the Lions' two.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Nikola Antic, along with the Jumbos' defense, added to their season shutout totals, as Antic's two saves on the afternoon were plenty to increase the shutout totals to six on the season.
Yanez's goal today marks the second of the season, as Yanez was well due to score, as he currently ranks second on the team for shots this season with 24, only one shot behind team leader Feigin who has 25.
The Jumbos' win today, their record advances to 7-1-3 on the season, 3-1-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, as Emerson drops to 6-4-3 this season, 0-2 in the New England Women and Men's Athletic Conference.
The Jumbos resume action in one week on Saturday, October 14
th, as they battle NESCAC opponents Bates College from Bello Field in Medford, MA in the annual Scott Greenwood Memorial Match at 2:30 pm. Live stats and video coverage will be available at
