POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 12, 2023) – On a busy day to start their 2023-24 season, the Tufts University women's fencing team won six out of eight matches at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday.
Ranked fifth in Division III, Tufts had a strong 21-6 victory over #8 Haverford College and narrowly lost 14-13 to #2 Johns Hopkins University. To finish the day the Jumbos had a good showing against Yale University – ranked 12
th in Division I – losing by an 18-9 score. The Jumbos also had victories against Fairleigh Dickinson University (25-2), Wagner College (17-10), Drew University (18-9), Lafayette College (21-6) and Stevens Institute of Technology (18-9).
The Jumbo foil squad had an outstanding day, compiling wins in 62 of their 72 matches (.861). Seniors
Sydnee Lau and
Lea Levi both earned 21-3 records (.875) for the day and junior
Shannon Chen was 20-4 (.833). Lau won two of her three matches versus Yale and all three had two wins apiece against Hopkins as Tufts won 6-3 in foil over the Blue Jays. They were all 3-0 against Haverford.
In sabre Tufts won 51 of 72 bouts (.708) on the day, led by first-year
Nitika Subramanian who was 13-2 (.867). Newcomer
Mina Chioldi also performed well at 12-4 (.750). Junior
Anat Katz took two out of three against Yale to finish the day 11 of 16 (.688). Chioldi won twice in the Johns Hopkins match, and the group won eight of nine combined versus Haverford with Subramanian and Katz taking all three of their contests.
A total of 16 wins by 2023 NCAA Collegiate Championships qualifier
Karen Bei led the Jumbo epee weapon. She went 3-0 versus JHU. Tufts also got seven victories from junior
Ayelet Book in epee matches today.
The Jumbos will open Northeast Fencing Conference play next Sunday (Nov. 19) at Boston College.
