CHESTNUT HILL, MA (November 19, 2023) – The Tufts University women's fencing team split eight matches today at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet hosted by Boston College. The fifth-ranked Jumbos' 15-12 win over #4 Wellesley College was the highlight.
Tufts' other victories came against Sacred Heart University 21-6, Vassar College 17-10 and Wagner College 14-13. The losses were against Brown University 23-4, #6 MIT 15-12, Boston College 20-7 and #3 Brandeis University 16-11. Tufts is now 10-6 overall.
In the win over Wellesley, the Jumbos received a 9-0 performance from their sabre squad. First-year

Anat Katz and sophomore
Alexia Newell each won all three of their matches. Senior
Sydnee Lau was 3-0 in foil and sophomore
Karen Bei took two out of three in epee.
The match against MIT saw the Jumbos win foil 5-4, led by another 3-0 record from Lau. Chioldi and Newell were both two for three in sabre, and Bei won all three of her matches in epee. The close victory over Wagner featured 3-0 records by Bei in epee and Lau in foil, where the Jumbos had a decisive 6-3 weapon victory.
First-year
Mikayla Joseph (epee), Lau (foil) and Katz (sabre) were 3-0 to lead the win against Vassar. Bei (epee), Chioldi (sabre) and Newell (sabre) were two for three in the loss to Boston College. Bei, Lau and Newell posted winning records in the Brandeis match.
For the eight matches overall, sabre was the only weapon which produced a winning mark for Tufts. They were 42-30 (.583), led by Chioldi at 14-7 (.667) and Newell at 12-8 (.600). Lau was the Jumbos' most successful individual with a 19-5 record in foil overall, winning at .792 percent. Senior
Lea Levi reached double-digits with 10 wins in foil. Bei's winning percentage of .739 came from a 17-6 overall epee record.
The Jumbos will play at Brandeis in a solo match next on December 3.
