WALTHAM, MA (December 3, 2023) – The Tufts University women's fencing team completed its first-semester schedule at the Brandeis Invitational today, winning two of their six matches.
The Jumbos opened the day with a 16-11 loss to MIT, the #6 team in Division III. Tufts also had competitive losses to ranked Division I teams, 15-12 versus #10 Cornell University and 15-12 against #13 St. John's University. The team then won two in a row, 23-4 over Lawrence University and 25-2 versus Yeshiva University. In the final match of the day Brown University topped Tufts 16-11.
The Jumbos, who now have a 12-10 overall record, finished with winning marks in all three weapons. The sabre squad led the way with a 34-20 mark, while both epee and foil were 30-24.
For sabre, first-year
Nitika Subramanian won eight of her 10 matches (.800) on the day to lead the way. She took two out of three against St. John's. First-year
Mina Chioldi was 8-4 (.667) including a 3-0 mark versus Brown and two victories over Cornell. Sophomore
Alexia Newell was a combined 4-2 versus good MIT and Cornell teams and finished 7-6 (.538) for the tournament.
Junior
Shannon Chen's 10-8 record (.556) in foil represented the most victories for Tufts today. She won two out of three against Brown. Senior
Lea Levi took two of three against MIT and St. John's and was 9-7 in total (.563). An 8-7 mark (.533) by senior
Sydnee Lau included two wins against Cornell.
Sophomore
Karen Bei won 75-percent of her contests with a 9-3 record in epee. Six of the wins came in 3-0 sweeps against MIT and Cornell fencers, and she was two for three in the St. John's match. Junior
Ayelet Book posted a 6-3 mark and first-year
Mikayla Joseph won seven times today. Junior
Olivia Tomasello was two for three against Brown.
The Jumbos will return to action when they host the Tufts Invitational on January 14.
