HACKENSACK, NJ (February 12, 2023) – The Tufts University women's fencing team continued its successful 2022-23 season by winning seven of their eight matches during a busy day at the FDU Invitational on Sunday.
Competing at Fairleigh Dickinson University against eight opponents, Tufts' seven victories came against Hunter College (24-3), New Jersey Institute of Technology (16-11), Wagner College (19-8), The City College of New York (24-3), host FDU (27-0), Drew University (22-5) and Army (25-2). The lone defeat was by a 16-11 score to Temple University, the 11th-ranked team in Division I.
The Jumbo win over NJIT saw Tufts take 7-2 victories in the foil and sabre weapons.
Sydnee Lau was 3-0 in foil matches and
Anat Katz was undefeated (3-0) in sabre. In the other close match versus Temple, the Jumbos went 7-2 in sabre with three victories by
Alexia Newell and two each by Katz and
Emily Valadez.
The Jumbo epee group battled for a 5-4 win in the Wagner match.
Karen Bei and
Erika Kim both had two wins to help give the Jumbos the edge. Bei also had two victories against Temple, and two in the Drew match where the Jumbos won 5-4 in epee.
For the eight matches overall, Tufts' sabre weapon earned an outstanding 65-7 record (.903). Newell won 18 of 19 matches (.947),
Millie Girardi had a 14-1 mark (.933), Katz enjoyed .900 success (18-2) and Valadez finished 15-3 (.833).
The Jumbo foil group finished the meet with a strong 55-17 record (.764). They were led by
Shannon Chen's .944 winning rate (17-1), while Lau was 14-2 (.875) and
Lea Levi went 13-3 (.813).
Alexis Enderle was undefeated in her 10 epee matches, where Tufts had a 48-24 mark overall (.667).
Ayelet Book lost just once in 11 bouts (.909) and Bei finished at 10-3 (.769). Oliva Tomasello had a 9-3 mark (.750).
Now with a 26-10 overall record for the season, Tufts will close out its regular-season at the LIU Shark Showdown coming up on February 26.
