BROOKLYN, NY (February 26, 2023) – The Tufts University women's fencing team concluded its regular-season on Sunday with wins over host LIU-Brooklyn (15-12) and Lafayette College (19-8) at the LIU Shark Showdown.
Head coach
David Sach's Jumbos finished their team schedule with a strong 28-10 record, including winning 21 of their last 22 matches. The Jumbos have individual competition at the NCAA Northeast Regionals coming up March 12 at Harvard University. Tufts' Regional participants will be announced soon.
Against LIU today, the Jumbos won sabre 7-2 and foil 5-4 while falling 6-3 to the Sharks in epee. The foil contest was tied at 3-3 after two rounds, then victories by Jumbos
Lea Levi and
Sydnee Lau in round three gave Tufts the win. Lau and
Shannon Chen both won twice in foil overall. The seven sabre weapon victories included three by
Alexia Newell and two each from
Anat Katz and
Emily Valadez. The Jumbos had lost to LIU-Brooklyn 14-13 at home back on January 15.
Versus Lafayette, the Jumbos pulled out two 5-4 wins in epee and foil along with a 9-0 victory in sabre. For the epee competition, the match was tied at 3-3 before wins from
Olivia Tomasello and
Ayelet Book in the final round clinched it for Tufts. Similarly in foil, the match was taken by Tufts on a victory by Chen in the third round. She posted a 3-0 record against the Leopards, while Lau notched two victories.
Millie Girardi, Katz and Valadez each earned a 3-0 record in sabre.
