BOSTON, MA (February 3, 2023) – Sophomore Devan Newhook scored in overtime to lift the Connecticut College Camels to a 4-3 victory over Tufts University in NESCAC men's hockey action Friday night at Warrior Ice Arena.
With the teams playing 3-on-3 in the extra session, Newhook was wide open on the left side of the net to tap in the rebound of a shot by Anthony Quatieri at 1:45 of the overtime period. The victory gave the Camels (4-15-0, 1-12-0 NESCAC) their first points of the conference season.
The teams had entered the third period tied at 2-2. The Camels killed one minute and 52 seconds of a 5-on-3 power-play for Tufts early in the frame. Junior goalie Cam Fernandez made five saves during this time.
Conn's Brett Moccia then scored on a power play 6:27 into the third putting the visitors up 3-2. Similar to the OT winner, he was at the left post to capitalized on a rebound and give the visitors their first lead since 1-0.
The Jumbos (6-12-1, 3-9-1) tied the game at 3-3 when freshman
Liam O'Hare, who had a goal and an assist this evening, one-timed a pass by junior
Sam Miller from high in the slot to score at 10:05 of the third. Jumbo junior goalie
Peyton Durand made seven saves down the stretch and the game went to OT.
The visitors had taken a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period. Seth Stadheim picked up the puck at the Jumbo blue line during a break and got a shot off around a Jumbo defender that went in at 17:03 of the opening stanza.
Tufts rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the second. Excellent fore-checking by
Aidan Lovett and O'Hare produced a loose puck behind the Camel goal line that Lovett collected and then he scored on a wrap-around at 8:51 of the second.
They would score again less than two minutes later as senior captain
Mason Kohn turned and fired a shot on goal from the high slot with freshman
Max Resnick on the doorstep to clean up the rebound for a 2-1 Tufts lead at 10:28.
However, after a time-out, Connecticut College would answer quickly (12:20). Quatieri got deep in the zone on the right side and zipped a pass to John Russo in front and he directed it home for a 2-2 score.
Stadheim and Russo both finished with a goal and an assist for the Camels, while Quatieri had two assists. Fernandez made 32 saves in goal, 12 in the third. Durand was on the spot for 35 saves as Connecticut College out-shot Tufts 39-35. He had 13 stops in the second frame.
Tufts was playing to raise awareness for Team IMPACT, the nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by pairing them with collegiate athletic teams. The Jumbos' Team IMPACT teammate Caeden participated in a ceremonial puck drop.
The teams turn around and play again in Connecticut tomorrow night.
