Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Hoops Finishes Non-Conference Play With Win Over Colby-Sawyer

MEDFORD, MA (February 7, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's basketball team put 15 players on the scoresheet Tuesday night, finishing non-conference play for the 2022-23 season with a big 91-54 win over visiting Colby-Sawyer College in play from Cousens Gymnasium.

The Jumbos (17-5) never trailed Tuesday night against the Chargers, leading by as many as 41 late in the second half. The key to the win for the Jumbos was their balance and ability to dominate inside, as Tufts out-rebounded CSC 54-28 which led to a 20-0 edge in second-chance points. Tufts also held a 54-14 advantage in the paint Tuesday, while forcing the Chargers into 29.9 percent (20-67) shooting from the floor.

Tufts scored the opening nine points of the game, capped by a three-pointer from senior Theo Henry before Colby-Sawyer finally got on the board four minutes into the contest on a Scott Lampron jumper. The lead reached double-figures at the 13:03 mark of the first half on a Casey McLaren lay-up, which was part of a 14-2 run that finished with the Jumbos up 27-9 with 9:50 remaining in the first half.

Colby-Sawyer would climb back with a 10-3 run to make it 30-19 with eight minutes left in the stanza, but 11 points was as close as the Chargers would get the rest of the contest as Tufts finished the half with a 10-0 spurt to lead 47-26 at the break. In the second half, Tufts was able show off its depth as no one on the roster played more than 17 minutes in rolling to the victory.

Junior Jay Dieterle posted 11 points, four assists and two steals as he made three of his six three-point attempts on the evening. First-year Joshua Bernstein finished a point shy of his personal-best, totaling 11 points and three rebounds on 5-of-8 shooting as he blocked two shots as well. Fellow first-year James Morakis was efficient on the night as he posted 10 points, five rebounds, five assists while making both of his three-point attempts.

Senior Tyler Aronson finished with eight points, while fellow senior Dylan Thoerner tallied seven points and three rebounds in 15 minutes. First-year Scott Gyimesi added six points and eight rebounds, and is now averaging 8.3 rebounds over his last four contests. Carson Cohen tallied five points, five boards and five assists, while Kris Bortz also recorded five points and five rebounds. Quinn Cain also came off the bench to tally five points for Tufts, which shot 53.5 percent (38-71) from the floor. Tufts also posted 27 assists on 38 made buckets.

Colby-Sawyer (9-14) was led by Kevin Cummings, who tallied a game-high 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor. Sadiq Abdullahi also added 12 points off the bench for the Chargers.

Tufts will finish the regular season on the road with two important New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contests, traveling to Middletown, CT Friday night to take on Wesleyan University before taking on Trinity College (CT) Saturday at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale.
