Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 4 W&L Tops No. 2 Women's Lacrosse In Maryland Saturday

SPARKS, MD (March 18, 2023) -- No. 4 Washington & Lee University used a 10-0 run to pull away from the No. 2 Tufts University women's lacrosse team, topping the Jumbos 16-5 in a Top 5 matchup from the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, MD.

Tufts (3-1) scored three of the first four goals, as first-year Kate Deehan put the Jumbos up 3-1 on a free-position shot with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter. That goal had come after Margie Carden opened the contest's scoring two minutes into the game with a free-position goal, while Caroline Conaghan also scored in the early minutes.

Washington & Lee scored with less than a minute to go in the first period to make it 3-2 going into the second period. The Generals (7-0) run would continue after the quarter change, as W&L tallied the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead midway through the period.

The Jumbos pulled back to within four on an Emma Joyce goal with 6:18 left in the opening half, but three goals over the final 4:20 of the half including two in the last 23 seconds of the period put W&L up 8-4 at the intermission.

The run continued into the second, as the Generals scored the first seven goals of the second half to pull away for the victory. Tufts earned 14 free positions on the night, but were successful on only four as Generals goalkeeper Caroline Kranich made 13 stops.

Caroline Walter also scored in the loss for the Jumbos, as she added five ground balls as well. Joyce totaled three draw controls, while Madeline Delaney also picked up three draw controls for the Jumbos.

W&L held a slight 26-23 lead in shot attempts, though the Jumbos edge the Generals 16-14 in the ground ball category. Pascale de Buren and Courtney Kaufman combined for seven stops as each played 30 minutes.

The Generals got five goals from Walker McKnight Saturday, as she scored on all three of her free-position attempts. Hannah Bishop added three goals, while Julia Thomson, Shannon Timoney and Sophie Edwards each scored twice for W&L.

Tufts will take on No. 5 Salisbury University Wednesday, March 22 at noon in Salisbury, MD in more non-conference action.
