MELBOURNE, FL (March 23, 2023) -- The No. 8 Tufts University women's tennis team got back into the win column after a pair of losses to non-Division III foes Tuesday, knocking off host Eastern Florida State College 9-0 in non-conference exhibition match from the Titan Tennis Center in Melbourne. The match does not count towards Tufts' overall record.
The Jumbos got things going in doubles as
Madeline Suk and
Caroline Garrido earned an 8-1 victory to put Tufts ahead early, tallying their fifth win together this year while picking up their first win at the No. 1 spot.
Rachel Cranley and
Lucy Mitchell teamed up at No. 2 doubles to earn an 8-3 win over Lucia Martinez and Paige Noble Lucas to double Tufts' match lead to 2-0. Cranley and Mitchell are now 2-0 together this spring.
The final doubles match would also go the way of the Jumbos, as
Zoe Kava and
Sophie Wax outlasted Emma Sanchez and Gloria Barcaro 8-5. The pair is now 6-1 at No. 2 doubles this season, and has won its last five matches overall.
The momentum that Tufts' gained in doubles play extended over into singles action, as the Jumbos won all six matches in straight sets. Kava upped her win straight to five with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, knocking off Helena Jokanovic. It was Kava's 10th straight victory overall including doubles. Cranley picked up her third win of the season at No. 2 singles, clinching the victory for Tufts with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Simona Hantzis.
Suk made quick work of her foe at No. 4 singles, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win to move to 4-2 this spring, and Mitchell knocked off Barcaro 6-1, 6-2 to also earn her fourth win of the dual match season.
Rebecca Lim chalked up her third victory in 2023 at No. 6 singles, as she defeated Luisa Renovales 6-3, 6-4. The final match of the afternoon to finish was at No. 1 singles, and Wax fought off Sanchez 6-4, 6-3 to complete the match sweep.
The Jumbos will return to Massachusetts, having some time off before hosting No. 9 Emory University Friday, March 31 at noon in Somerville.
