SOMERVILLE, MA (March 31, 2023) -- The No. 9 Eagles of Emory University swept the doubles portion of Friday afternoon's match with the No. 8 Tufts University women's tennis squad, topping the Jumbos 7-2 in action from the South Courts in the first match outside this spring season.
The Jumbos (2-5) were behind 3-0 after doubles, as
Madeline Suk and
Caroline Garrido fell at No. 1 doubles 8-4 while
Sophie Wax and
Zoe Kava also dropped their No. 2 doubles match 8-4. At No. 3 doubles,
Lucy Mitchell and
Rachel Cranley were outlasted by Iris Berman and Eliza McPherron, 8-6.
Tufts did get on the board at No. 4 singles and No. 5 singles, as Suk knocked off McPherron in a super tie-breaker 10-5 to earn a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) victory for the Jumbos. Kava continued her hot play in singles, as she moved to 6-1 this season in the spring with a straight set victory with score of 6-4, 7-5. Kava has now won five straight matches, all in straight sets, while her only loss came against Division I Brown University.
Mitchell had a great battle at No. 3 singles against Ana Cristina Perez, rallying to force a super tie-breaker with a 7-6 (5) win in the second set. Perez would win the final two points of the breaker though, earning an 11-9 victory to clinch the win.
The Jumbos will be right back at it Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m., taking on No. 7 Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play in Amherst, MA.
