MEDFORD, MA (March 28, 2023) -- The host Jumbos of Tufts University scored nine goals in the opening period, pulling away in the first half to earn a 20-6 non-conference win Tuesday afternoon over Endicott College in action from Bello Field.
The Jumbos (6-1) opened the scoring at 12:19 of the first quarter, as
Madeline Delaney was set up by
Margie Carden to make it 1-0.
Caroline Walter would net a person-up goal at 11:41, but Endicott got on the board on a Katie Schenk goal at 10:15 trim Tufts' lead to one. Carden posted her first of the day at 9:42 followed by another from Delaney to make it 4-1.
Following an EC goal at 7:09 of the opening period,
Emma Joyce netted her 14th of the season to start a five-goal run to end the first quarter as Carden tallied two more including a person-up goal to make it 9-2 at the end of the first quarter. Joyce kept the pressure on in the beginning of the season, as Joyce posted her third of the day and 16th of the season with help from Walter to put the Jumbos in double digits.
Tufts would end up outscoring their visitors 6-1 in the second quarter, as
Grace Frerichs tallied her first of the season with 90 seconds to go before halftime to make it 15-3 at the break. First-year
Kate Deehan scored her second of the day to start the third quarter, as
Caroline Cromwell,
Alexa Amorosino and
Sami Rothstein all netted their first of the year in the second half to secure the win.
The Jumbos doubled up the Gulls in the shot category, posting a 35-18 edge, while picking up 18 ground balls to just the 11 from Endicott. Tufts also earned a 19-10 edge in draw controls for the contest. The home team was also 6-for-8 on free position attempts.
Carden finished with her second straight game with five goals, adding an assist, as she scored on both of her free-position shots while posting her 100th point of her career finishing the game with 103. Joyce picked up a team-high seven draw controls in addition to her three goals and two assists, and Deehan and Delaney each posted two goals and four draw controls.
Allie Zorn scored a pair of goals while picking up two ground balls, and
Kate Mastrobuono added a goal and assist.
Kathryn Fernandopulle came in off the bench to pick up a team-high three ground balls, causing one turnover, and
Genna Gibbons also forced a pair of turnovers.
Courtney Kaufman made four saves between the pipes in 37:58 of action, while goalie tandem partner
Pascale de Buren stopped two shots as well.
Kiana Napolitano finished with team-best three points on two goals and an assist for Endicott, while Mia Smith also tallied a pair of goals in the loss.
The 20 goals for Tufts were the most in a game since potting 20 against St. Lawrence University in the NCAA Championships Second Round last year in a 20-5 win.
Tufts will hop back into New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play Saturday, heading to No. 1 Middlebury College for a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Championships title game at noon in Middlebury, VT.
