AMHERST, MA (April 1, 2023) -- Host and No. 7 ranked Amherst College got a win at No. 4 to break a 4-4 match tie and claim a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory 5-4 over the No. 8 Tufts University women's tennis squad in a thriller from Ludlow Tennis Club Saturday.
The Jumbos (2-6, 2-2 NESCAC) trailed 2-1 after the doubles' play, as
Zoe Kava and
Sophie Wax upped their doubles record in 2023 to 7-2 with an 8-7 win at No. 2.
Caroline Garrido and
Madeline Suk were knocked off 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while
Lucy Mitchell and
Rachel Cranley fell to Deliala Friedman and Sophie Diop 8-4.
Tufts would make a run at it in singles play, winning three of the first five matches to finish to tie the match at four. Wax picked up a straight-set victory at No. 1 for her third win of the spring thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 win. Mitchell was a winner at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-4, 7-5 win to up her record to 5-3 this season in singles play.
Kava was once again stellar in singles for the Jumbos, posting her eight win of the spring to improve to 8-1 after coming from behind for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position. With the match tied, Suk rallied after falling in the first set to register a 7-5 win in the second set of her No. 4 singles affair. In the deciding set, Calista Sha would take the momentum back to pick up a 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 win to clinch the win for the Mammoths.
Tufts will finish its busy weekend Sunday, traveling up to Clinton, NY for a NESCAC battle with No. 21 Hamilton College at 2 p.m.
