SOMERVILLE, MA (April 11, 2023) -- For the second straight match, No. 8 Tufts University swept doubles play, using that momentum to cruise past No. 27 Brandeis University 7-2 on a beautiful day at South Courts in non-conference women's tennis action.
The Jumbos (6-6) got back to .500 on the season with the victory Tuesday, as
Zoe Kava and
Sophie Wax continued their hot play of late with an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. The duo has now won 10 of its 13 matches this spring, going 8-2 over its last 10 overall.
Madeline Suk and
Rachel Cranley would up Tufts lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 win at No. 1, the pairs' second straight win, while
Lucy Mitchell and
Stephanie Woodbury stayed unbeaten as a pair with an 8-6 win over Nancy Zhang and Ella Chase at No. 3 doubles.
Tufts needed only two wins in singles to clinch the victory, and they quickly came as Suk earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 to make the match score 4-0 for the Jumbos. The clinching win came at the No. 2 spot, as Cranley tallied her second straight victory and fifth win this spring with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
Kava won her 11th straight singles match Tuesday, earning a straight set victory with a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline at No. 3.
Casey Cummings upped her mark in singles to 2-1 in 2023, chalking up a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 6.
In a straight twist, both of Brandeis' wins came by the exact same scoreline as Rebecca Suarez and Anastasia Sia picked up 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) wins at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.
With the win, the Jumbos have now won four straight matches overall.
Tufts will be on the road Friday, April 14 to start a busy four-match weekend, heading to No. 3 MIT at 3 p.m. for non-conference action in Cambridge, MA.
