SOMERVILLE, MA (April 11, 2023) -- No. 8 Tufts University women's tennis team swept singles play, using that momentum to cruise past Trinity University 8-1 on a beautiful day at South Courts in NESCAC women's tennis action.
The Jumbos (7-7) got back to .500 on the season with the victory Saturday, as
Zoe Kava and
Sophie Wax picked up a clutch 8-7 victory at No. 2 doubles that saw them win the final set 7-2 to tie the match at 1. The duo has now won 11matches this spring, going 7-3 over its last 10 overall.
Casey Cummings and
Kennedy May would up Tufts lead to 2-1 with an 8-7 win at No. 3, their first win together as double partners. The duo won the tiebreaking set in a clutch 7-5 victory. Trinity's double victory came at No. 1 as Isabella Hartman and Josephine Kimball defeated
Rachel Cranley and
Madeline Suk 8-4.
Tufts needed only three wins in singles to clinch the victory, and they quickly came as
Rebecca Lim earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 to make the match score 3-1 for the Jumbos. At the No. 1 spot, Cranley secured the Jumbos fourth points and sixth win this spring with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
The clinching point for Tufts came at the No. 3 position as Kava was victorious in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, for her 13
th victory this spring. Suk continued Tufts' success as she put Tufts up 6-1 in the match with a straight set victory, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
In the last two matches, first it was Wax winning in straight sets at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Next it was
Stephanie Woodbury who won in three sets as she rebounded after dropping the first set and was dominant in the ensuing two sets, 6-3, 6-0, 1-0 (10-2).
Tufts will have two matches on Sunday, April 16, first heading to Babson College at 9 a.m. for non-conference action in Wellesley, MA. The other match is a conference match against Connecticut College at 2 p.m. for senior day on the South Tennis Courts.
