WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (April 16, 2023) –
Allie Zorn scored for the No. 5 Tufts women's lacrosse team with two minutes remaining to secure a big road victory at No.14 Williams College, 7-6 at Farley-Lamb Field in Williamstown, MA.
Following a missed Jumbo free position shot, Zorn won the race to endline and picked up the ball with under 10 seconds remaining on the shot clock. The first year showed poise under the pressure, beating her defender, and getting to the front of the net, allowing her to find the back of the net and giving Tufts the 7-6 lead.
Caroline Walter got the scoring started for Tufts as she got past her defender and scored to make it 1-0 Tufts. After a Williams goal tied the game at 1,
Courtney Kaufman came up with a big save on a Williams free position shot to keep the game tied.
Madeline Delaney won a free position attempt after scooping up a ground ball and attacked the cage but Williams was in her shooting space, which Delaney scored to give the Jumbos as 2-1 lead. Kaufman kept the score where it was as she stopped another Williams free position shot right before the quarter ended.
The second quarter saw Isabel Arvelo tying the game for the Ephs. The Tufts defense would then hold strong over the final 10:43 of the quarter as they held Williams scoreless. During that same stretch, the Jumbo offense picked up steam as
Margie Carden gave Tufts the lead back at 3-2 after she scored on the free position shot.
Ella Lesperance made it 4-2 Tufts just 28 seconds before halftime as she scored from a free position shot.
Coming out after halftime, Delaney scored her second of the game and gave Tufts a 5-2 lead less than two minutes into the quarter. Franny Donohue for the Ephs came back and scored to make it 5-3 as Williams started to turn the pressure up. Donohue and Arvelo would each add another goal as Williams tied the game at 5 as the teams headed to the fourth quarter.
Williams would take its first lead in the game in the fourth quarter as Grace Collier scored on the free position with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Tufts refused to go away as Carden scored her second goal of the game as she got to the front of the net and found the back of the net to tie the game at 6 apiece. After two nice saves by Kaufman to keep the game tied, Zorn scored the game winner as she used her speed and instincts to duck underneath her defender and get to the front of the net as she made it 7-6 Tufts. Donohue had an opportunity at the buzzer, but Kaufman stuffed her to secure the Jumbo victory.
Tufts (10-3, 6-2 NESCAC) was led by Carden and Delaney who each scored two goals on the afternoon. Walter, Lesperance, and Zorn each scored a goal.
Emma Joyce had four draw controls while Delaney had three and four ground balls. Kaufman was big in net all game as she made 12 saves in the game.
For Williams (10-3, 5-3 NESCAC), Arvelo, Collier, and Donohue each had two goals. Claudia Russell had three draw controls. Anj Raman made eight saves in net for the Ephs.
Tufts will be back on the road on Saturday, April 22
nd, as they continue its NESCAC schedule, traveling to Clinton, NY and facing Hamilton College at 12:00 PM.
